Gynaecomastia

Gynecomastia is a benign condition where males develop chests that resemble female breasts, varying in size. This condition often leads to psychological distress, with many males seeking surgical solutions to regain their self-confidence. The stress from this condition can sometimes limit their daily activities, such as socializing with friends, wearing desired clothing, and participating in outdoor activities.

The popularity of gynecomastia treatment surgery is on the rise due to its availability as a minimally invasive technique. This leads to reduced downtime and results in a more contoured and firm chest appearance.

Many males who suffer from ‘man boobs’ or gynecomastia have battled with the condition for a long time before consulting a plastic surgeon. Many have been dealing with this condition since puberty and only seek medical consultation when they reach adulthood or their twenties.

Numerous causes have been identified for gynecomastia. These can include common medications, anabolic steroids, natural or synthetic estrogen hormone derivatives, herbal or growth supplements, marijuana (Ganja), alcohol abuse, chronic liver failure, renal failure, and obesity. A comprehensive medical history is taken during the consultation with the plastic surgeon to ensure the most effective results after the procedure.

Occasionally, it may be advisable for pubertal boys to wait and see if the condition regresses on its own. However, for the majority of boys and men seeking an effective solution, surgery is often the chosen path due to the tremendous benefits this minimally invasive procedure offers.

How is Male Chest Reduction done in Mohali?

Procedure

The ‘male chest reduction surgery’ involves a surgical procedure that uses liposuction and removal of excess glands to achieve a ‘flat chest’ appearance. Liposuction is performed through small keyholes, and any remaining excess chest tissue after liposuction is removed through a small incision well concealed in the areola. In cases of Grade I Gynecomastia, liposuction alone may be sufficient, and an areolar incision may not be necessary.

Length

The duration of the procedure can range from one and a half to three hours for higher grades.

Anesthesia

Either general anesthesia is used, or intravenous sedation and local anesthesia are used. Patient safety is our highest priority.

Inpatient/Outpatient

In most cases, it is an outpatient procedure. Patients return to their homes on the same day of the surgery after being observed in the clinic for a few hours post-procedure under the guidance of the concerned surgeon. If performed under local anesthesia, one may leave shortly after the procedure.

Temporary side effects such as bruising, swelling, numbness, soreness, and/or a burning sensation are possible.

Potential risks may include the development of a fluid collection under the skin (seroma), which may need to be drained with the help of a syringe.

Looseness of the skin, which does not drape back, is possible with very advanced cases, and scarring may occur if the skin needs to be removed.

Asymmetry is possible after the procedure, which is correctable if the patient is overly concerned about it.

Loss of nipple sensation may occur, which usually recovers in the long term. Rarely, a second procedure to remove additional tissue may be required.

A compression garment is required to be worn after the procedure for about four weeks to lessen discomfort and help the skin re-drape to the chest contours. Strenuous activities need to be restricted for a few weeks after the procedure.

What are the most common reasons for seeking chest implant surgery?

Results can be enhanced with a proper diet and exercise regimen. However, significant or massive weight gain may cause the chest area to enlarge again. Visit Dr. Renu, a Gynecomastia specialist in Mohali, for desired results.
